Infant & Toddler Care

Birth - 6 months
Clean mouth with damp gauze or wash cloth after feeding and at bedtime.
Regulate feeding habits.

6 - 12 months
First tooth should appear, time for the first dental visit.

Begin to brush after each feeding and bedtime with a small soft bristled brush. Use less than a pea size of fluoridated toothpaste.

12 - 24 months
Wean from breast milk or bottle as early as 12 - 16 months. Prolonged nursing or bottle habit highly increases the risk of baby bottle decay. Baby bottle decay is a type of decay that attacks quite rapidly, usually affecting the upper front teeth then the upper and lower back teeth. Begin or continue with regular care by a family or pediatric dentist.

Sucking Habits
Most children stop sucking thumbs, pacifiers, and fingers on their own between two-four years. Children that continue past age four may develop the upper front teeth to tip towards the lips, and may cause an open space in the front region when the teeth are biting together. If this is occurring, ask your dentist for any recommendations to break the habit.
