Membership FAQs
How do I join CDABC?
Please Note: if you attempted to join and the form states that your email address is being used by another user, please scroll to the next question and answer. Thank you.
To renew, use the Memberhsip Renewal link in My Desktop after you login to the CDABC website.
To join as a new member, click here to join online. The fee is $125 +HST ($140) until March 31, 2013 and $125 +GST ($131.25) effective April 1, 2013. Membership includes 12 continuing education credits that you redeem by taking courses in our online CE library. Membership runs for one year from the date you join.
If you are a new member who prefers to pay by cheque, please use this form. Renewing members can simply mail a cheque and include their full name and email address.
I tried to join online, but the form states that my email address is in use.
That message indicates that you have an account with CDABC (likely from prior to March 31, 2007 when membership was mandatory--you paid one fee to the College and automatically became a CDABC member).
Please do not create a new account with a different email address. Instead, to login to your existing account and renew your membership, click Forgot My Password (left side of the page under the username and password area). Your login will be emailed to you.
I am already a member. When does my membership expire, and how do I renew?
Login to your account and click on My Desktop to view your expiry date. If your expiry date is within 90 days, a link called "Membership Renewal" will be displayed underneath your expiry date.
Credit card: Click on Membership Renewal in My Desktop to renew your membership to pay by credit card.
Cheque or money order: Click on Membership Renewal in My Desktop to renew your membership with cheque payment. You will be emailed an invoice; please print the invoice and mail it to CDABC with your cheque: Please make it payable to CDABC and mail it to 504-602 West Hastings Street, Vancouver, V6B 1P2. The amount is $140 ($125 +HST) for March 31, 2013 and earlier and $131.25 ($125 +GST) April 1, 2013 and later. Please include your full name, email address, and phone number with your cheque or money order if you do not send in the printed invoice. Cheques or money orders received without an email address cannot be processed. Please contact CDABC if you do not have an email address.
Is membership refundable?
Membership fees are not refundable. [Constitution & Bylaaws, Part 2 - Membership, 2.4 (1).]
Why does membership have tax?
Organisations collect tax if membership dues includes services/products over a certain dollar value (such as our continuing education courses and access to malpractice insurance).
In January 2010 the CDABC Board of Directors lowered the regular membership fee from $135 to $125 to help absorb the cost of the taxes. Our best option to keep membership dues low is to have a higher number of members.
What type of membership is available?
There are three types of membership in CDABC. 1) Active membership - available to CDAs registered in the province of British Columbia. 2) Student membership - available to students registered in a CDA training program in BC. (Graduating students can login to the website and click on Upgrade to renew their membership as an active member.) 3) Associate membership - available to anyone with an interest in certified dental assisting or our continuing education program.
For more information or to register, please click here.
What is the membership cycle?
Active and Associate membership run for one year from the date you join. Student membership runs September 1 - August 31, with some adjustments made for schools that do not follow the traditional school year. New graduates: click on Upgrade my membership to renew as a regular Active member (login and select My Desktop).
Will the CDABC send me a copy of my membership receipt?
Membership receipts are sent electronically by email immediately after payment is received. Please keep you receipt; reissuing of receipts may incur a $10.00 charge. Send us an email if you require a copy to be resent. Requests by phone are not accepted. Allow up to 14 business days for CDABC to process your request.
Can I claim my CDABC membership fee on my income tax?
CDABC membership is not mandatory for you to practice as a CDA. However, earning continuing education is a requirement of your certification, and CDABC membership includes continuing education courses. Please direct your question to a qualified accountant or visit the Canada Revenue Agency here.
I am a certificant with the College of Dental Surgeons of BC. Does that mean I'm automatically a member of the CDABC?
Not as of April 1, 2007. Before then, your licence fee included your CDABC membership fee. But then that changed; practicing CDAs would have noticed that their licence fee was significantly less since 2007, because it no longer includes your CDABC membership fee.
Now, in order to be a member of your professional association (CDABC), CDAs join separately. The only difference is that instead of writing one cheque to the College of Dental Surgeons of BC, you pay each membership separately: you pay the College $110 (please verify with the College) and you pay the CDABC $125 +tax. Click here to join.
Is there a list of current promotions and products I am eligible for as a member of the CDABC? What types of promotions does the CDABC offer?
There are many products and services available to you as a member of the CDABC, including insurance products. Active membership includes up to 12 complimentary continuing education credits per year! For other offerings, please click here.
Is it important to obtain malpractice insurance? Where can I obtain coverage, and is it affordable?
CDABC recommends that all CDAs purchase their own malpractice insurance. The fee for CDABC members is very affordable at $26/year. CDABC highly recommends malpractice insurance coverage. Malpractice insurance provides peace of mind to practicing dental assistants.
At less than $30/year, you can obtain an affordable, professional plan. As a member of CDABC, you have access to this highly recommended plan. Click here for more information. Members can login to their CDABC account and click Store for the form and to purchase the insurance.
